The current styles of fans like the 60 inch ceiling fans are relatively new designs in the history of fans.  Ceiling fans were initially seen in the years between 1860′s and 1870′s in the United States.

Although, in the initial stages, they were not run by motor but worked with the help of a flowing steam of water which was connected to a turbine mechanism. This water would fall on a belt and help the blades of the fan work. At that time there were only two blade fans.

The first ceiling fan run by electricity was invented by Philip Diehl in the year 1882. Later he made further improvements in the electric ceiling fan and also added a light kit to the fan which would give extra light to the room. But at this stage the ceiling fans were very expensive, only the well to do people could afford ceiling fans. It was yet not a part of the lives of the ordinary people. These fans were used more in restaurants, offices and industries.

Further more improvement took place in the ceiling fans and the number of blades increased from two to four. The merit of such an improvement was that now the ceiling fans made less noise and circulated more air.

During the world war one the ceiling fans became literally non-existing. The reason being the Great Depression, which has a sever impact on the ceiling fan manufacturing industry. This situation prevailed till 1950’s, but tremendously improved in 1960′s.During the 1960′s the ceiling fan manufacturing moved out of the United States and now ceiling fans were manufactured in East Asia too.

In 1960′s the modification in ceiling fans took another turn .Now there were fans with five blades. The designs, the accessories attached to fans changed now and then. Fans came in all colors.

Designs were inspired by everything on the planet and even beyond.  The more fancy the fan was, more was its demand and sold well. Fans attached with light fixtures came in more those a hundred designs. The rich and the famous got fans custom made for themselves, stylish ceiling fans. The ones inspired by Victorian era were quite famous. Parents got their kids ceiling fans for their bedrooms inspired by their favorite cartoon characters.

Home decoration, office decoration was incomplete without good, complimenting fans. These cheap ceiling fans truly gave a different look and feeling to the room and ambience. By this time there was introduction of air conditioners too and this caused a huge crisis in the ceiling fan industry. But the ceiling fans in the 1960′s had an advantage.

The Americans realized the fact that the ceiling fans were much cheaper and caused less pollution as compared to the, then new, air conditioners which were quite expensive and caused pollution too. Due to this factor the ceiling fan industry got a revival and the manufacturers started the production of ceiling fans again. Later on different types of ceiling fans came into the market like low ceiling fans, outdoor fans, commercial fans etc.For the large rooms of the home, a 60 inch ceiling fan is usually the best option.
